Project

Solar PV Panels Installation – Phase 1

Stations: Shenstone, Perry Barr and Northampton

Project Overview

This project focused on installing solar photovoltaic (PV) systems across selected rail stations to reduce energy costs, improve sustainability, and support Net Zero targets. The initiative formed part of a wider renewable energy strategy and trial programme to assess the benefits of solar deployment across the estate.

Phase 1 covered surveys, design development and approvals, followed by system installation and commissioning completed upon funding approval.

RPS Role

RPS Project Manager played a key role throughout the project lifecycle, including:

  • Drafting and contributing to the Executive Business Case

  • Supporting the feasibility study, energy audits and system selection

  • Defining funding requirements and cost structures

  • Managing surveys, approvals and supplier coordination

  • Overseeing programme delivery

Our project management team delivered strong coordination with stakeholders, suppliers and station teams to enable smooth progress and the achievement of the programme and cost targets.

Solution Delivered

The project delivered tailored solar PV solutions at each site:

  • Shenstone Station – Solar carport system to generate clean energy for station operations

  • Perry Barr Station – Rooftop PV installation designed to meet a significant portion of site energy demand

  • Northampton Station – Expansion of an existing PV system with additional capacity and battery integration

Key Outcomes

  • Feasibility report was completed on time with design, calculations and submitted for DfT approval on time, later on was approved by DfT.

  • Reduced reliance on grid electricity and improved sustainability performance

  • Estimated energy savings of approximately 93,588 kWh per year

  • Contribution to carbon reduction targets and long-term operational savings

Post-Project Support & Lifecycle Management

Following entry into service, a replacement inverter was required at one of the stations. Our Project Manager efficiently delivered this upgrade by:

  • Accessing RPS’ established PV contractor and supplier database

  • Identifying compatible equipment quickly

  • Coordinating procurement and installation

  • Minimising downtime and restoring system performance to meet energy performance targets

This shows RPS’ ongoing asset management capability and our commitment to long-term client support.

Client Benefits

  • Lower energy costs and improved asset efficiency

  • Renewable energy generation aligned with Net Zero strategy

  • Reliable delivery supported by strong project governance
